| I began collecting Elizabeth Peters First
Editions because I had read my Amelia Peabody mysteries so many
times, the paperbacks were wearing out.
I don't know how I came to first read them,
but I expect the Egyptology theme, combined with the detective
aspect, first attracted me. I traveled in my job at the time
and spent hours in bookstores in strange cities buying reading
materials for the hotel room and planes. I read hundreds of
detective fiction books, but some of them attracted me back to their
universe for a second reading. Anyway, Amelia became addictive and I
began to accumulate the paperbacks.
But soon, that wasn't good enough, I wanted
them in hardback, so I set about finding hardback reading
copies on the internet. Well, that was in the 1990's. I
daringly ordered one from Amazon at what seemed an exorbitant price,
only to find, when it arrived that it was a signed first
edition.
There it was, the original book. It had a
different cover from the paperback edition, and SHE had signed
it. It was almost as if Amelia herself had come into my study
to have a look at my Egypt resource library! I was hooked.
So I have collected first editions, signed and
unsigned every since. I have branched out now. I collect a few
other authors and I happened upon "Night Train to Memphis"
by Ms Peters and enjoyed Vicki Bliss, too. So she went on the
buying list.
This website is created as a guide to learning
about the Amelia series, and a resource for the in's and out's of book
collecting.
I have all of the books in the series, and I
thought other people might enjoy seeing the original dust jacket
art. So I have included pictures of the covers.
There are many good sites on the internet that
tell you about the jargon of the book collector, and with sites like
ABE Books and BiblioFind, and of course, Amazon Used Books, you can
search the world for your favorite author and have them delivered to
your door. So I have included links to all these sources - Google
links to websites on book collecting, and specific links for the
places you can buy the books, new and used.
There are also great sites on the internet
devoted to the author. Here are are few links -
- Amelia

the mystery series by Elizabeth Peters. Includes maps,
Peabodyisms, author events schedule, and book list.
- Elizabeth
Peters Unofficial Fan Page - dedicated to Elizabeth

- Mertz
- Peters - Michaels - official web page for Barbara Mertz,

names Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels.
